In 1930, the Council, in cooperation with the Miner’s Welfare Institute, purchased land from the Glasbrook estate to be used for recreational purposes. Ravenhill Park was officially opened on 4th May 1931 by Lord Mayor Councillor Miller J.P. At the opening ceremony, the parks superintendent noted that this beautiful area was the 37th park for Swansea, and 2,000 bags of sweets were handed out to local children. The aim was to provide for all age groups and activities. There was a cricket pitch (with the steepest outfield in the country), a fabulous bowling green, and two pavilions – one for cricket, one for bowls, a children’s paddling pool, a playground, and a bandstand. The park was renowned for its well-tended flower and rose-beds, and for being a place of peace and tranquillity.
In 2015, Swansea Council was faced with significant cuts in public funding. The Council, led by Councillors Rob Stewart and Robert Francis-Davies, created 'Friends of' groups for Swansea parks. Since then Friends of Ravenhill Park (FORP) has worked diligently to bring parks users together, to secure funds for many improvements, and to consider how an income stream could be created to help make the park sustainable for the future. FORP has held many events: afternoon teas, family fun days, an annual dog show, and even an Ascension Day celebration with our friends from local churches. In 2021, we were delighted to be able work with City of Sanctuary colleagues on a series of talks about different countries including Nigeria, El Salvador, Pakistan and Syria. We were are thrilled to bits with new playground equipment for younger and older children, and in 2025 it was incredibly to see our hut on the bowling green extended and completely refurbished.
