A Jewel in the Cockett Ward Crown
Thousands of us grew up in the park. We remember the flower beds, the immaculate bowling green, the tennis courts, the cricket pitch, the old pavilion, the water fountain, uncontrollably running down the big hill towards Lovers’ Lane, and Joe the parky. Some of use moved into the area more recently and were thrilled to discover the park for the first time. Times change but the park remains. The simple low-cost, no-cost pleasures of walking, running, sitting, chatting, playing, and picnicking have been enjoyed by so many people from surrounding communities for over 90 years. After lockdown the process of looking ahead to the next 90 years began.
In 2021, we mapped the park and labelled the four entrances in blue (1-4) and key areas in yellow (5-12). These included:
1 Cenotaph entrance
2 Ravenhill Road entrance
3 Top Middle Road entrance
4 Bottom Middle Road entrance
5 Playground
6 Bowl’s hut, café and old bowling green
7 Games area
8 New sensory play and study area
9 Old bandstand
10 Old cricket pitch area
11 Lovers’ Lane
12 Natural play area
Planning & Engagement
The for each area we asked a series of questions:
What is there now?
Are improvements required?
What would we like to see in this area?
What are the chances of improving this part of the park?
This coincided with the Council's plan to regenerate play and community facilities across Swansea and we saw more improvements than we anticipated.
Planning for the future is a continual process. As a newly formed Society we will be considering how we build on what we already think is good practice to encourage even more community engagement.
